Interest Tours

customised peak district holidays designed for you

Whatever your interest Tailor Made Stays can create a customised tour especially for you.  The Peak District has so many interesting places to see.
Tradition and history surround our area and we can find something of interest for any group.

Well dressing is a long held tradition in this area.  As thanks for the supply of clean fresh water, each year, villagers decorate all their wells with tableau, often with a religious themes, with a picture made completely of flowers and leaves.

These decorative scenes are carefully pricked out in clay, then areas are painstakingly laid with petals, leaves, bark and other natural objects.  The final result being most the beatuiful colourful pictures.  A service of Blessing is held and visitors can view the wells throughout the week they stand.  This is a tradition held in most of the villages in Peak District and throughout the summer and Tailor Made Stays will ensure your escorted tour includes some of the best examples of this ancient custom.

The Peak District has many stories of ghosts, ancients tales of romance and even some to chill the bones, abound in our area and ghost walks are a very popular way to absorb the atmosphere of times gone by.

Your escorted tour could include a taste of the many literary connections with our area.  Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, both visitors to the area, used the Peak District as inspiration for their books.

With many old manor houses and stately homes the Peak District is a magnet for filmmakers who want to use the authentic buildings and scenery we have in abundance.

Your escorted tour can take you to the sites of recent filming.  Pride and Prejudice, popular 2005 version of this classic tale, starring Keira Knightley, Jane Eyre and The Other Boleyn Girl were all filmed in this area.
Tailor Made Stays escorted tours can take you to visit the beautiful areas seen in these films.

Eyam the ‘plague village’ with its tragic, yet heroic story of the villagers decision to isolate themselves to prevent the deadly ‘black death’ from spreading throughout Derbyshire.  Imagine taking the decision to stay knowing that by staying you were risking death, not just yours but that of your whole family.  Many families were completely wiped out during this terrible time.

Walk round the village and see the houses, each with their plaques that tell of the poor victims who died there as the illness devastated their lives.  Your tour will include a visit to the church where a list of fatalities shows how the disease made its slow progress through Eyam.  An interesting museum also tells this fascinating story.

Learn about the Padley Martyrs, our tour can take you to this special and beautiful quiet area.  In Elizabethan England severe penalties were metered out in an attempt to eliminate all Catholics, rumour and repression was the order of the day and no one was safe.

Sheepdog trials are popular with visitors.  Those who look after sheep, sometimes on difficult terrain, need the help of one or more sheepdogs.  For many years dogs have been bred to develop traits of intelligence, stamina and obedience.  Border Collies are the breed known as the finest example of these dogs.  Competitions and demonstrations showing the skills of handler and the dog offer a fascinating insight into the life of the hill farmer.

Only a few of the many interesting places in the Peak District are mentioned here.  Our interest tours are many and varied and Tailor Made Stays offer you the chance to enjoy as many of them as you would like.

Your escorted tour can be a combination of the interesting activities available or it may be you have a special interest not mentioned here.  Please contact us with any queries or suggestions for a tour that would suit you.

How Interesting

One of England's most popular stately homes and one of its largest private houses is Chatsworth House the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Chatsworth is believed to have been the inspiration for Jane Austen's Pemberley, home of Mr Darcy, in the book Pride & Predjudice and Chatsworth has been used as a setting for the many adaptations of the novel.england tour england tours

The village of Edensor on the Chatsworth estate was razed to the ground then rebuilt out of site of the main house.

The Padley Martyrs, Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlam, were two catholic priests, captured in 1588, taken hanged, drawn and quartered.  The ruins of Padley Hall still exist behind the tiny Padley Chapel.england tour, england tours

Castleton has a shivering mountain and the Devils Arse.

Mary Queen of Scot’s was imprisoned at nearby Hardwick Hall and was allowed to visit Buxton to take the health giving spa waters.
